Schoelkopf Gallery New York, NY 10013
January 17 – February 28, 2025
Schoelkopf Gallery is honored to announce the sale and exhibition of important works of art from the collection of Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall. The exhibition American Stories: The Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall Collection will be on view at the gallery from January 17 – February 28, 2025, and will be accompanied by a fully illustrated scholarly catalogue. The Kennedy Marshall collection is the most significant private collection of regionalist and social realist art created between 1920 and 1970 and reflects Kennedy and Marshall’s unparalleled approach to collecting genre-defining works of art. The collection features masterworks by American artists Romare Bearden, Thomas Hart Benton, Jared French, Jacob Lawrence, Paul Sample, Ben Shahn and many others. The Kennedy Marshall collection comprises nearly forty remarkable paintings, works on paper, and sculptures, defined by iconic images of figurative storytelling with a modern sensibility.

Paul Starrett Sample (1896-1974)
Celebration, 1933
Signed at lower left: PAUL SAMPLE
Oil on canvas
40⅛ x 48⅛ inches
101.9 x 122.2 cmCelebration was created in 1933 as Paul Sample's response to Thomas Hart Benton's Boomtown. The painting was directly inspired by Pieter Brueghel the Elder's 1567 work Land of Cockaigne, which warned about the dangers of temptation. This work marked Sample's dramatic transformation from an Impressionist style to a new artistic approach. The painting is set in the mining camps of Randsburg, California, depicting miners and scattered oil rigs across a vast desert landscape. Sample used this setting to tell the story of the boom-and-bust cycle characteristic of the American Western frontier. In creating Celebration, Sample abandoned his earlier painterly technique in favor of crisp, elegant draftsmanship similar to Grant Wood's Flemish Old Master realist style. The painting employs a cinematic, panoramic viewpoint filled with action.

Engelhard showed artistic talent from a young age, exhibiting her work at Stieglitz's 291 Galleries when she was just six years old. She had her first solo exhibition at age ten in 1916, which received positive critical acclaim. She developed close relationships with both Stieglitz and Georgia O'Keeffe, spending summers at the Stieglitz family compound in Lake George. Engelhard's early artistic work was influenced by O'Keeffe, often emulating her style and subjects and lending her the nickname "Georgia Minor."
